Taking a Break From Facebook in the New Year Might Be Great for Your Mental Health


But you already knew that, right?


It's been a whopper of a year, and now, we're forced to face our most obnoxious family members during the holidays. Other than pouring yourself a glass (or several glasses) of wine, there's one thing you can do to preserve your mental health this holiday season: take a break from Facebook.

An entirely unsurprising study found that taking just a week off Facebook considerably improves mental health. Wow, you mean not seeing terrible political rants and painfully sappy "Happy three months, babe" posts makes you happier? Shocker!

The study, which was published in Cyberphysiology, Behavior, and Social Networking, studied approximately 2,000 people, half of which stopped using Facebook for a week. Some were active users, while others were just moderate or occasional users. Based on survey results, after a week, the group that gave up Facebook had better well-being and life satisfaction if they were heavy users to begin with, but not nearly as much benefit if they were only moderate or light users. They also were less envious.

"The present study provides causal evidence that quitting Facebook leads to higher levels of both cognitive and affective well-being," study author Tromholt Morten wrote. "The participants who took a one-week break from Facebook reported significantly higher levels of life satisfaction and a significantly improved emotional life."

Shock and awe.
